How MUN Operates

Model UN conferences typically follow a structured format, with participants engaging in committee sessions, plenary sessions, and formal debates. The process begins with delegates researching their assigned country’s policies, positions, and interests on the agenda topics. During committee sessions, delegates deliver speeches, participate in moderated caucuses and unmoderated caucuses, negotiate with other delegates, and draft resolutions to address the issues at hand.

Benefits of Model UN to participants

Developing Diplomatic and Negotiation Skills

Model UN provides a hands-on opportunity for students to practice diplomacy, negotiation, and conflict resolution in a simulated international setting. Delegates learn how to articulate their country's position, build alliances, and find consensus among diverse perspectives.

Building Leadership and Teamwork Skills

Model UN encourages teamwork, collaboration, and leadership development as delegates work together to achieve common goals and navigate diplomatic negotiations. Delegates learn to lead, delegate responsibilities, and work effectively within a team dynamic.

Fostering Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Abilities

Model UN challenges participants to analyze complex global issues, consider multiple viewpoints, and develop creative solutions to real-world problems. Delegates learn to think critically, evaluate evidence, and formulate strategic responses to address global challenges.

Increasing Global Awareness and Understanding

Model UN exposes participants to a diverse array of international issues, cultures, and perspectives. Delegates gain a deeper understanding of global affairs, international relations, and the workings of the United Nations, broadening their worldview and fostering cross-cultural appreciation.

Networking and Professional Development Opportunities

Model UN conferences provide valuable networking opportunities for students to connect with peers, faculty advisors, and professionals in fields such as international relations, diplomacy, and public policy. Participants may also gain access to internships, scholarships, and other academic and professional opportunities through their involvement in Model UN.

Enhancing Public Speaking and Communication Skills

Delegates hone their public speaking and communication skills through delivering speeches, engaging in debates, and advocating for their country's interests. Model UN encourages delegates to express themselves clearly and persuasively, fostering confidence and effective communication abilities.

Specialized Events

Opening Ceremony

Delegates will be warmly welcomed at the CityMUN Conference during a remarkable Opening Ceremony. This event is usually graced by senior government officials, members of the diplomatic community, and representatives from the media. It serves as a grand introduction to the conference, setting a formal and inspiring tone for the days to come.

Grand Symposium

CityMUN provides a grand symposium where distinguished individuals deliver speeches on the central theme of the conference and inspire/motivate delegates with their personal stories. In the past, we have had the privilege of hosting renowned leadership experts such as Dr. Ahmed Buhari, Dr. Linus Okorie (President, GOTNI), Prof. Sheriff F. Folarin (Texas State University), Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Sen. Ireti Kingibe (Senator Representing the FCT), Fola Daniel Adelesi among others. These speakers share their insights on global issues, leadership, and diplomacy, offering delegates a wealth of knowledge and inspiration.

Preparatory Class

CityMUN offers preparatory classes before the committee sessions commence, aimed at assisting delegates, especially first-timers, in understanding how Model United Nations (MUN) functions and delving deeper into the Rules of Procedure. These preparatory classes will be conducted by seasoned Model UN veterans, with support from our secretariat members. They will guide delegates through the step-by-step procedures of MUN, ensuring everyone is well-prepared to participate actively and confidently.

Committee Session

The Committee Sessions, led by Chairpersons, are the core of a Model UN Conference. Delegates have the opportunity to simulate real United Nations (UN) sessions, representing their assigned countries as diplomats. During these sessions, delegates engage in debates on pressing global issues, negotiate, and collaborate to draft resolutions to address some of the world’s most critical problems. This is where the skills of diplomacy, negotiation, and public speaking are put to the test.

Cultural Night/Entertainment

One of the most enjoyable parts of CityMUN, and Model UN conferences in general, is the Cultural Night. CityMUN hosts a cultural/entertainment night where all delegates dress in the cultural attire of their country of origin or the country they represent at the conference. They showcase their cultures through colorful performances, including traditional dances, music, and other forms of artistic expression. This event fosters cultural exchange and bonding among delegates.

City Tour

As part of the conference experience, CityMUN arranges a recreational city tour, allowing delegates to explore the host city and appreciate its beauty. This tour provides a break from the formal sessions and an opportunity to learn about the local culture, history, and attractions, enriching the overall conference experience.

Diplomatic Dinner/Awards Night

CityMUN hosts a prestigious Diplomatic Dinner/Awards Night, offering delegates the opportunity to connect and build relationships in a formal yet relaxed setting. The diversity of delegates, both local and international, provides a significant learning opportunity. The Diplomatic Dinner allows delegates to expand their networks and engage in meaningful conversations with peers and mentors.

Awards

To acknowledge outstanding performances during the conference, CityMUN presents several awards with prizes. Distinguished individuals will present these awards to student delegates, school delegations, and faculty advisors who have excelled during the event. These awards recognize exceptional contributions, leadership, and diplomacy, encouraging participants to strive for excellence.
